Between digital control and civic courage lies the space for artistic intervention:
What remains of the self in the digital shadow – and what emerges when we appear as a collective "we"?
A!KO TANZ FEST 2025 was an international dance laboratory that took place in Linz, that year in cooperation with the Ars Electronica Festival under the overarching theme PANIC. The focus was on two artistic strands: Digital Shadows – a performative exploration of digital identity, surveillance, and algorithmic control – and Flood the Zone with Courage, a format for public interventions that reimagines protest, civil courage, and collective presence through physical actions in urban space.
Participants became part of a transdisciplinary working process that began with a shared introduction to thematic, aesthetic, and societal questions. This process was guided by an internationally composed Artistic Leading Ensemble, bringing together artistic and academic perspectives. The team’s expertise spans contemporary dance, immersive theatre, performance studies, digital research, and political action.
Through workshops, movement labs, and rehearsals in public space, performative formats are developed collaboratively with the ensemble – both in the studio and in urban settings. The focus was not on a finalized piece but on collective artistic research and experiential formats that culminated in daily performances during the Ars Electronica Festival (September 3–7).
A!KO TANZ FEST 2025 offered a space for exchange, political reflection, and embodied artistic practice. As part of an international network, participants contributed their perspectives, explored new forms of artistic expression, and engaged actively within the dynamic interplay of art, society, and digital transformation.

A!KO TANZ FEST 2025 im Zeichen von „PANIC“
Von Workshops bis ins Ars Electronica Festival – Linz wird zwei Wochen lang zum Labor für Tanz, Theater und gesellschaftspolitische Themen.
Vom 25. August bis zum 7. September 2025 bietet das A!KO TANZ FEST wieder der ganzen Stadt außergewöhnliche Performance-Formate, verwoben mit aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Fragen. Zum ersten Mal enden die beiden Festivalwochen mit Auftritten an mehreren Standorten in Linz im Rahmen des Ars Electronica Festivals.
Internationale Gäste und Workshops, die Grenzen sprengen
Das A!KO TANZ FEST beginnt am 25. August und bietet bis zum 5. September im Sonnenstein Loft Workshops und Trainings für Profis und Fortgeschrittene – von zeitgenössischer Tanztechnik bis zu ausgefallenen Formaten wie Theatre Wrestling. Geleitet wird letzteres von Selina Nowak aka Zelina Power – Wrestlerin, Performerin und Kampfchoreografin, die normalerweise im Ring, in Filmen oder in den Metropolen von Europa bis Mexiko auftritt. Neben Zelina Power treffen in sogenannten Festival-Labs internationale Künstler:innen, Forscher:innen und Performer:innen aufeinander – von Linz bis Mexiko, von Schottland bis Südkorea. Tänzer:innen, Choreograf:innen, Wissenschaftler:innen und Aktivist:innen entwickeln dort neue Formate, unter anderem für die finalen Performances auf dem Ars Electronica Festival.
Höhepunkt im Ars Electronica Festival: Interaktive Performances in Linz
Vom 3. bis zum 7. September gipfelt das Festival in Performances beim Ars Electronica Festival. POSTCITY Linz, Alter Markt und Mariendomplatz werden dabei zur Bühne. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Themen wie digitale Identität, Überwachung und Zivilcourage – letzteres lädt das Publikum dazu ein, selbst verschiedene Formen des Protests auszuprobieren. Festivalleiterin LiLi Jung In Lee sieht darin einen Meilenstein: „Seit seiner Gründung 2017 steht das A!KO TANZ FEST für internationalen Austausch und ein Ort zum Ausprobieren. Mit der Kooperation mit dem Ars Electronica Festival öffnen wir diesen Freiraum für ein noch größeres und vielfältiges Publikum.”
