30th AUG, 2024 / Sonnenstein LOFT @Saal 1

Piece #1. Yeram Kang (KR/AT) 'For the day of SIXTH'

The only thing that makes us different from other living beings is our senses and memories. We – as a human being can explore different aspects of our bodies by focusing on memory and sensation. Imagine the moment when we were first born into the world in a state of ignorance. Is that innocence still there in me? What was your first action when you felt first sense?

Piece #2. Seo Jin Moon (KR/AT) 'Continue up'

The word ‘up’ in the title means both “to keep piling up” and “to get closer”.  The idea starts with the question, “How can we put discarded man-made resources into a circular process?” Since man-made resources do not return to nature, they need to be continuously recycled.  Process of ‘up’ and ‘recycling’, and express the will to circulate in the upcoming phenomena unconsciously. We can share the process of how the materials around us are circulated and returned to us, and thoughts on the phenomena that are approaching unconsciously. It also creates movements inspired by one of the street dance genres of “house” and combines them by substituting the verbs mentioned above.

Piece #3. Alberto Serrano (US/ES) 'BULLPUNCHER'

In the realm of the self, amidst a landslide,

You, without choice, confront the ego, a bull in disguise.

In this arena of cathartic combat,

Punches whisper release,

Echoes cascade through the heart,

Breaking, embracing, rebuilding.

Oh Bullpuncher,

A battle, a serenade waiting within...

Choreography, Dance : Alberto Serrano

Piece #4. Juliana Vargas Rodríguez (CO/AT) 'Distant Oder'

A dance piece about sculptures with one hand on the forehead and the    other one on the chest. They sing songs of prisioners, mountain cats, golden teeth and horses. A dance piece about merciless wounds. A dance piece inspired by a newspaper from yesterday, with the headline “Pedro Navaja died”. A dance piece placed in a plastic city where it only rains and snows. A dancepiece were she never walks sideways, she dances with one mouse, with many thombs and a lot of flare. Shortly (and for those who didn’t guess it yet), a tribute to salsa music.

Concept and performance: Juliana Vargas Rodríguez

Sound design: Felix Bürger

Music: El Ratón by Cheo Feliciano y Joe Cuba Sextet, LLuvia con Nieve by Mon Rivera, Eso se baila así by Willie Colón y Hector Lavoe, Si Echao Pa’lante by Eddie Palmeri

A!KO TANZ FEST was founded in 2022 by Lee Jung In CREATION (Director: Lili Jung In Lee / KR, AT) and Co-Producer Damian Cortes Alberti, marking the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Austria and Korea.

The festival’s mission is to present curated international dance works, celebrate the art of dance, and offer audiences a space for connection, dignity, and joy through movement. A!KO also supports emerging dance artists in expanding their reach onto the global stage and fosters inclusive dance experiences that bring people together.

As a bridge for international dance exchange rooted in the Linz dance community, A!KO continues to grow through collaborations with global artists and presents diverse dance programs annually in both Austria and Korea, expanding into a larger global community from 2025 on.

The festival is supported by Tanzhafen Festival, Redsapata Kulturinitiative, Sonnenstein LOFT, Gangwon Arts & Culture Foundation, Arts Council Korea, and operates in strong partnership with CID Vienna Section, Anton Bruckner Private University, and the Rosenberg Dance Festival.
